In honor of our exhibition at the RBMS Conference this week in Las Vegas:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas | Terry Gilliam | 1997
Revised script for the 1998 film. A draft that was originally sent to Steadman by Alex McDowell at Rhino Films/Fear and Loathing LLC, the film’s production company, for Steadman’s review and input.
With Ralph Steadman’s handwritten notes (photocopied) throughout, and his holograph signature with splatter on the front wrapper, dated June 24, 1997 at Tomales Bay, Inverness, California. A photocopy of McDowell’s original note to Steadman, dated June 16, 1997 is bound in at the rear.

Also with the carbon of the original Federal Express waybill, dated 6/16/97, from McDowell at Rhino in Los Angeles to Steadman at the Hotel Milano in San Francisco; and a photocopy of Steadman’s 1997 summer itinerary, which consisted mostly of a stay at Hotel Milano followed by a stay at Manka’s Inverness Lodge, a hunting and fishing lodge.
By all appearances, Steadman photocopied his annotated script and then signed it as a gift for a fellow lodger at Manka’s, putting with it the aforementioned ephemera. Principal shooting began in August 1997 in Los Angeles and Nevada, two months later.
White self-wrappers, title page integral with front wrapper, with revision dates of 5/14/97 and 5/27/97 on the front wrapper, with credits for novelist Thompson, director-screenwriter Terry Gilliam, and screenwriter Tony Grisoni. 97 leaves, photographically reproduced. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads.
Criterion Collection 175.
